Have your experienced covid?
This recent paper suggests that one of the reasons that Covid can cause IBS is because of the imbalance that it causes in the GIT Microbiome which disrupts the gut lining and causes an increase in visceral hypersensitivity (which means you’re more sensitive to pain from things like gas).
Supporting your microbiome is incredibly important for our overall health as well as digestive wellbeing.
Here are some tips to support a healthy microbiome:
1. Eat a wide variety of plant foods, especially foods rich in poly phenols (brightly coloured veg especially)
2. Avoid foods which disrupt your gut bugs like highly processed foods, sugary foods and excessive alcohol.
3. Practice stress management techniques as stress can have a harmful impact on your microbes.
4. Have regular time in nature. Bush walks, gardening and time at the beach has been shown to have a beneficial impact on your microbe balance, as well as reducing stress.

My top three functional tests include
1. Stool analysis: your gut microbiome tells you so much about your health and can provide some great actionable steps to improve. I use cobiome which is a very comprehensive test.
2. Dutch test looks at your hormonal levels and also provides insight into how well you are metabolising and excreting your hormones. It also has the option to assess stress response with cortisol production and metabolism.
3. A hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA) is very helpful for assessing beneficial and heavy mineral status especially the ratios between the minerals which often provide insight into the function of different body systems eg adrenals
Unfortunately these tests are pricey… so I don’t always jump into doing this unless I feel it’s necessary, and definitely not all at once. Blood tests can be helpful but aren’t always able to dig into the areas we need information for more chronic/complex conditions.
A thorough case taking can provide a deep understanding of potential imbalances and underlying causes and with that we can start with a treatment plan. If we don’t get the progress that we expected, then we can dig deeper.

Lately, I’ve had more patients than usual share

Lately, I’ve had more patients than usual share their experiences of being scoffed at by their doctor for seeing a naturopath. One patient was even brought to tears when she asked to get some basic blood tests to help her understand why she'd been struggling with her health for years. It frustrates me to no end hearing these stories, because what we need is communication and teamwork between different practitioners, not competition.
Some patients ask, "Why do some doctors dislike naturopaths so much?" There are a few reasons. I believe sample bias plays a role—just as I see patients who’ve had bad experiences with their doctors, the same is likely true in reverse. Another factor is how the medical industry can sometimes discourage an open-minded approach to natural remedies and health sovereignty. Let’s be honest, the pharmaceutical industry has little incentive to fund research into herbal medicines, given their financial motives, and the difficulty of the research itself due to the complexity and multifaceted nature of herbs. That often leaves natural treatments under-researched compared to conventional drugs. Unfortunately, hundreds of years of empirical data is not valued as highly as a clinical trial.
But despite this, I always encourage my patients to maintain their relationship with their doctor. Be open about your naturopathic treatments, and share your successes! That’s how we begin to shift perspectives and break through the conditioning.
A practitioner should never belittle your choices. Offering their opinion or advice is one thing, but dismissing or insulting you is unacceptable. There’s a place for allopathic medicine, just as there’s a place for natural medicine. When we work together, we offer patients the best of both worlds.

We are in the middle of a confusing spring, hot and cold days chase each other, rain and wind comes sporadically and pollen torments those with allergies.
According to the principles of Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, the liver is out most active organ at this time of year, and so adjusting our eating behaviours to suit can help us cope with some of the common health concerns that pop up around this time.
Energetically the liver holds heat and anger, it also influences our weight and out metabolism.

Did you know: according to traditional Chinese medicine principles it’s important to protect your ‘Wind Gate’ during windy days to help protect from colds and ‘flu. Your wind gate is at the base of your neck and your lower back. So wear a scarf and a long coat and make sure you eat well today!

Episode two, gut health in the mini series of THINGS YOU DON'T HAVE TO PUT UP WITH.
Hands up if you've been putting up with any of these symptoms for a while, or been told it's just IBS.
It's normal for your tummy to get a bit bigger after eating, it's normal to have a little bit of wind, it's normal to have some changes in your bowel motions with your cycle... but when gut symptoms persist or affect your quality of life (e.g. you feel like you can't go out in the morning because you're worried about not having emptied out completely, or you need to get up in the middle of a meal to go to the toilet) then that's the sign you need to get some help.

Considering getting some naturopathic support and not sure what type of appointment to make? Let me break it down for you....
Initial consultations are the beginning of the journey. During this session we discuss your health concerns and goals and go through your case history. With that information I will formulate a treatment plan specifically for you. Sometimes treatment plans need to be made in stages, unravelling issues as we go, and sometimes we need to begin with relieving symptoms before tackling the underlying issues.
Herbal medicines and nutritional supplements are usually prescribed, along with diet and lifestyle suggestions, and referral for testing may be completed as well.
After the initial consult comes follow up consults. This is when we review progress, keep you motivated, and adjust the treatment as needed.
What about kids? Even though we don't always need the full hour for a children's consult, it's best to allow for it.
What about if you have seen me before, but not for a long while? Book an extended follow up.
What if you haven't seen me before and feel you need more than an hour? There is an option for an extended initial.
What if you only need support for a cold/flu/acute support? Short consults are perfect for this.
What if you have an appointment booked for a month or two, but have a question that is too long for an email? Short appointment to the rescue!
The other option is group consults, which are part of the Beat Burnout program. If you are experiencing stress, or issues relating to the pillars of health that I address in the program which includes mood, sleep, gut health and inflammation, this is suitable for you. Group consults are a cost effective way to get naturopathic education and support.
