[fb_button]

YOU ARE NOT ALONE

If you experience anxiety, you are not alone. Conditions like anxiety and depression are becoming increasingly common. In Australia and New Zealand about 20% of adults will experience a mental illness at some stage in their lives. 3% of Australian adults experience anxiety in a year (this is high!) and 55 to 60 % of these are women. The higher incidence of women with anxiety may be due to the fact that men seek treatment less frequently. The average high-schooler today has the same level of anxiety as the average psychiatric patient in the early 1950’s. We are getting more anxious every decade.

When we are presented with a stressful situation it is normal to feel some anxiety, however it is when this becomes more prolonged or severe that anxiety is considered to be a ‘disorder’. Anyone who has experienced anxiety knows that you can’t just “stop worrying” or “snap out of it” – if it was that simple then it wouldn’t be such a problem. Thankfully, there is much that can be done. One of the first steps to overcoming anxiety is understanding that it’s not ‘all in your head’, but learning about the condition, and then taking steps to get better by seeking help.

WHY?

There are several types of anxiety, such as generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorders, post traumatic stress disorders and phobias. These can be caused by slightly processes in the body, and will give different symptoms as well.

Given the increased pressure we have on ourselves with work, finance, family, relationships and not to mention all the scary things the media warns us about, it’s no wonder that anxiety is so common. Support networks (groups of people that we can turn to who listen to and understanding our concerns) used to exist in greater strengths, however with everyone’s busy lives and the impact of technology on social interactions we are no longer able to ‘debrief’ as we once were, and so our stresses are exaggerated and not dealt with properly.

There are many different causes and triggers of anxiety (so many that it could fill a book) so I will only list some of them.

Neurotransmitters are chemicals which allow our neurons to communicate with the rest of our body by an electrical signal. If there is an imbalance in these, we can get a problem with mood. Serotonin, Glutamate, GABA and Dopamine are most often involved with anxiety. The way that we make neurotransmitters is like a factory line – we start with protein and there are several steps along the way where certain vitamins and minerals add bits and pieces to get the final product. If something goes wr0ng with that factory line, you get neurotransmitter imbalances.

Emotional triggers. This doesn’t really need explaining.

Hormonal imbalances. Many women (and their partners) are well aware of the affects of PMS on mood. Anxiety and depression are very common around ‘that time of the month’.

Blood sugar level fluctuations. When your blood sugar levels drop it can cause feelings of anxiety, so eating a low GI diet is important to prevent anxiety.

Diet : deficiencies. What you eat can affect your mood. A lot. There are a few vitamins and minerals in particular that have very important roles in making our neurotransmitters (think of the factory line mentioned before), and if you are missing one or any of these then the process either doesn’t occur, or goes in the wrong direction.

Diet : triggers. Food intolerances, caffeine or other stimulants, preservatives and additives can trigger anxiety via a complicated chemical process which ultimately – you guess it – disrupts that neurtransmitter factory line.

Digestive problems. Did you know we make most of our neurotransmitters in our digestive system? It makes sense then that digestive problems can upset the subtle balance of these neurotransmitters, affecting your mood. Most people with IBS have probably noticed this connection for themselves – have a stressful day, and your gut suffers (and vice versa). Liver issues can also be connected with anxiety, potentially via their effect on intestinal health and bilirubin toxicity, even though some conditions such as Gilbert’s syndrome are frequently labelled as being symptom free.

Toxicity (e.g. heavy metals)

Inflammation. A lot of mental health conditions are now being linked to other auto-immune/inflammatory conditions, and depression itself is considered to be an inflammatory condition.

WHAT CAN I DO?

Seek help!

According to a research paper from the Lancet published in 2006, despite the great number of pharmacological options less than half of the patients suffering from panic disorder experience a full and sustained remission. What should we take from this disappointing fact?

We need to realise that what causes anxiety is not the same for everyone. Treatment of anxiety and other mental health conditions needs to be holistic. By this I mean that all the factors that combine to cause anxiety need to be addressed, and that treatment should incorporate different methods to do this, such as counselling, nutrition, herbal medicine, massage and acupuncture to relieve the symptoms of anxiety and address the underlying causes.

Complementary medicine can do marvellous things for anxiety, however if your anxiety is severely debilitating then medication may be necessary in the short term. It is advisable not to self prescribe as anxiety and depression require specific doses and quality of herbs which are difficult to find in the retail range, and there are interactions between some medications and herbs which should be avoided.

There are many different treatment options available giving you plenty of choice and whichever one you choose it is most likely you will get some relief – choose a therapy that you have an affinity with and combine it with a cognitive therapy (e.g. counselling, hypnotherapy or meditation) and you’re on the right path.

Don’t lose hope – if you seek help then you can regain control over your anxiety.

Some tips to help you along your way

Meditation is one of the oldest and most effective ways of managing anxiety and mood disorders. Research has shown that people who take conventional medications for anxiety who also meditate have a better result. This is a good practice to incorporate into your daily ritual to help manage anxiety.

Breathing techniques are a very important part of managing anxiety. A lot of people don’t breathe correctly, which is usually a habit we don’t even realize we have. Some of us are chronically bad breathers as a result of growing up with breathing conditions such as asthma or sinus disorders. This incorrect way of breathing can worsen anxiety, often leading to hyperventilation.

Your diet can have a strong impact on anxiety, both positively and negatively. To begin with, simply reduce the foods that can trigger anxiety (see above) and try to increase your intake of nourishing foods like good fats, vegetables and whole (intact and unprocessed) grains – preferably organic. For further guidance consult a naturopath or nutritionist.

Exercise. Walking, jogging, swimming, pilates, yoga. Get moving – it does wonders for burning up your stress hormones and clearing your thoughts.

Keep Rescue Remedy or Emergency Essence handy to use if you have an acute episode.

Mindfulness exercises are a great technique to ‘unclutter’ your mind. There are plenty of different techniques available (just do an internet search) but the core of the technique is that you are concentrating solely on what is happening at that moment in time. Mindful eating is a great habit to get into – it improves stress as well as digestion.

The silly season is fast approaching and as summer hits we tend to overindulge. The extra alcohol, rich foods, fatty foods and sugar leaves less room for our healthy meals and our poor livers are left with a lot of work to do.

Luckily the liver is a very resilient organ. The liver is the only organ in the body that is capable of regenerating itself. It plays a major role in digestion and detoxification. It produces bile to help us break down fats and alcohol. It stores some of our vitamins and minerals, such as iron, vitamin A, B12 and copper. The liver is responsible for cholesterol regulation. Most importantly, everything that is absorbed in the small intestine (including food, drinks, vitamins, minerals, macronutrients, food additives, chemicals etc.) is then transferred via the blood to the liver for further processing. Nutrients are made into products that can be more easily used by the body. Toxins are generally broken down into less toxic substances and flushed out of the body. This is known as ‘detoxification’. It is this detoxification process that reduces the toxic effects of a poor diet.

So how can you support and stimulate liver detoxification? Below is a list of suggestions to keep your liver functioning well this summer.

1- Start each morning with 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar in around 30-50mls of room temperature water. ‘Shot’ the vinegar 5-25 minutes before breakfast to kick start liver function, detoxification and stimulate digestion for the day.

2– Drink dandelion root tea. Research has found that 2 cups of dandelion root tea a day stimulates liver detoxification. Sometimes called ‘dandy coffee’, dandelion root is a great substitute for all the coffee drinkers out there as it does have quite a bitter, coffee like taste but is caffeine free. It tastes best with a splash of soy milk and honey. Drink between meals to support the liver and to help digest meals.

3- Turmeric. Go crazy on turmeric! Turmeric supports liver detoxification (as well as being a fantastic anti-inflammatory, it low cholesterol, is anti-cancer and an antioxidant). Turmeric is a yellow Indian spice commonly used for colouring in curries. It has a mild taste so can be added into many different foods. You can find it raw (it looks like ginger) but it is just as beneficial to use the dried powder. Add ½ a tsp. of turmeric powder into marinates, soups, curries, stir frys. It can be mixed into rice, cous cous or quinoa after cooking. You can mix through smoothies or juices. Of course it turns all your foods bright yellow, but with such a mild taste it can be mixed into many different foods.

4- Another spice that aids liver health is rosemary. It contains rosmarinic acid, which inhibits toxic damage to the liver. Add to marinates, soups, casseroles. You could also make a rosemary infused olive oil by adding a few sprigs and using as a dressing.

5- Keep your vegetable intake high. Specifically, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, alfalfa and beetroot improve liver function. Try to include these veggies in your diet on a daily basis.

6- Have a freshly squeezed vegetable juice most days. Fresh juicing is a great way to sneak more veggies into your day and make up for you what you may otherwise miss out on. Please find a detox juice recipe below!

7- Supplement with Chlorella. Chlorella is a type of algae with a high nutrient level. It promotes alkalinity within the body, but most importantly is has the ability to bind to toxins such as heavy metals and chemicals and pull them out of the body. It is often prescribed as part of a detox regime and can be taken as an alternative to a multivitamin due to it vitamin and mineral levels.

Detox Juice

Ingredients

Beetroot

Celery

Spinach/kale

Pineapple

Papaya

Lemon

Mint

Optional extra- chlorella, spirulina, wheatgrass etc

Method

Push all ingredients through the juicer, ensuring you mix the ginger, lemon, mint and leafy veggies between the more juicy ingredients.

Cholesterol

The Low-Down On Cholesterol

It seems that everyone is talking about cholesterol these days, but do you really know what it is? What can you do to maintain healthy cholesterol levels? Are high cholesterol levels really bad? Or are they a sign of something underlying?

Cholesterol is a type of fat molecule that is carried around in the blood. It is only present in animals. It performs useful functions in the body and is a major building block for cells and many of your hormones, including oestrogen, testosterone and cortisol. It is an essential component of cell membranes and it is synthesised in almost all human tissues. The brain and central nervous system, connective tissue, muscle and skin account for about 75% of total body cholesterol. We need cholesterol for these parts of our body to work properly.

Cholesterol is also important for the synthesis of vitamin D, as well as bile acids which aid in the digestion of fats. Our bodies manufacture cholesterol but it can also be found in foods containing saturated fats.

Cholesterol is a healing agent. When there are problems in the body such as inflammation, stress or hormone imbalances our liver will make more cholesterol to deal with this problem. Keeping this in mind we can see that high cholesterol levels are not as much a problem in themselves, but rather an indicator or warning of something else going wrong in the body. One of the main triggers for the body to make more cholesterol is inflammation, which in itself is a big cause of heart and vascular disease. Simply lowering cholesterol levels ignores this underlying problem.

The Good vs. The Bad Cholesterol

HDL and LDL are letters that you may have seen before on a blood test, and it is important to review these to monitor your health. But what do they mean?

Remember that cholesterol is actually a fat molecule and is only found in animals (so the labels on potato chip packets saying ‘No Cholesterol’ are kinda redundant) and when we consume it in a food from animal products we are consuming the cholesterol molecule as a whole, as ‘free cholesterol’. When cholesterol is in our blood it has to be transported in particles called lipoproteins. This is what we measure in blood tests.

In your blood test, your total cholesterol is made up of different types of cholesterol transport systems known as lipoproteins. These lipoproteins have lots of different roles in the body. While our understanding of these forms of lipoproteins is constantly evolving, the current view is that the two main types of cholesterol have different roles, and they are commonly known as the “good” and “bad” cholesterol. These are the main types:

High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) is called the “good” form of cholesterol. Its role is to carry cholesterol from the tissues to the liver to be broken down and excreted. It is thought that higher levels of HDL compared to LDL helps to decrease cardiovascular risk because HDL helps to keep LDL ‘in check’. We should aim to get our HDL as high as possible to support our heart health.

Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) is often referred to as the “bad” form of cholesterol because it can “stick” to and narrow the arteries in the heart. This increases the risk of the coronary artery disease known as atherosclerosis. Most of the cholesterol in our plasma (blood) is carried on LDL where it transports cholesterol from the liver to body cells for use in cell membrane repair and the production of hormones and bile salts. Higher levels of LDL are a warning sign of things going wrong in the body that can contribute to heart disease.

An interesting perspective on the thinking behind the terms ‘good’ and ‘bad’ cholesterol and the reason why cholesterol levels fluctuate in the body is well explained by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride:

“The question is, why do some people have more cholesterol in their blood than others, and why can the same person have different levels of cholesterol at different times of the day? Why is our level of cholesterol different in different seasons of the year? In winter it goes up and in the summer it goes down. Why is it that blood cholesterol goes through the roof in people after any surgery? Why does blood cholesterol go up when we have an infection? Why does it go up after dental treatment? Why does it go up when we are under stress? And why does it become normal when we are relaxed and feel well?

The answer to all these questions is this: cholesterol is a healing agent in the body. When the body has some healing jobs to do, it produces cholesterol and sends it to the site of the damage. Depending on the time of day, the weather, the season and our exposure to various environmental agents, the damage to various tissues in the body varies. As a result, the production of cholesterol in the body also varies.

Since cholesterol is usually discussed in the context of disease and atherosclerosis, let us look at the blood vessels. Their inside walls are covered by a layer of cells called the endothelium. Any damaging agent we are exposed to will finish up in our bloodstream, whether it is a toxic chemical, an infectious organism, a free radical or anything else. Once such an agent is in the blood, what is it going to attack first? The endothelium, of course. The endothelium immediately sends a message to the liver. Whenever our liver receives a signal that a wound has been inflicted upon the endothelium somewhere in our vascular system, it gets into gear and sends cholesterol to the site of the damage in a shuttle, called LDL-cholesterol. Because this cholesterol travels from the liver to the wound in the form of LDL, our “science,” in its wisdom calls LDL “bad” cholesterol. When the wound heals and the cholesterol is removed, it travels back to the liver in the form of HDL cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol). Because this cholesterol travels away from the artery back to the liver, our misguided “science” calls it “good” cholesterol. This is like calling an ambulance travelling from the hospital to the patient a “bad ambulance,” and the one travelling from the patient back to the hospital a “good ambulance.” (1)

Once again it seems that the conventional understanding of good and bad cholesterol is forgetting why cholesterol is being produced in the first place, and neglecting to address the underlying causes. We need to find a happy medium behind the above interpreation and the conventional understanding of good and bad cholesterol. LDL is not bad in itself but it can be made bad by other factors, and we should use it as a marker of other problems in the body. We know that higher levels of HDL are associated with reduced levels of heart disease and it has a protective mechanism, preventing LDL oxidisation where it can be transformed by the immune system to a different type of cell which can cause problems – this is covered in more detail below.

Cholesterol and Diet

It is a common misconception that high levels of cholesterol are caused by a diet high in animal fats (meat, eggs and dairy). Our diet has much less of an effect on your cholesterol levels than we have been led to believe.

Only 30% of people have increased blood cholesterol from increased cholesterol consumption. The other 70% are protected by a regulating mechanism whereby the body produces less cholesterol when they eat more cholesterol, and produces more when they get less from food.

Cholesterol consumption has remained constant for the last 100 years while the incidence of cardiovascular disease has increased by 300%, indicating cholesterol intake cannot be the primary cause. And if it was, why are doctors having little success in preventing cardiovascular disease based on this theory?

One of the ways we can understand the increased rates of heart disease is looking at the differences in society’s diet over time. In the past fat and sugar consumption was lower, while vitamin, mineral, vegetable and unprocessed or ‘wholegrain’ intake was greater. These changes are causing cholesterol to have a more damaging effect on our body.

Cholesterol is not increased from the intake of cholesterol through our diet. Remember that we have a regulating mechanism, and the body will make more cholesterol if it feels it is necessary. Some examples of increased need for cholesterol may be if we have a hormone deficiency (cholesterol is the building block for hormones) or cell membranes require repair (if they’ve been damaged through inflammation or oxidation). Heart disease is increasing because we are more inflamed, have more oxidation, and have more hormonal imbalances. If we are eating too much sugar or omega-6 fatty acids (instead of omega-3) this causes inflammation and imbalances in our body. Stress (a potent but commonly ignored cause of high cholesterol) can cause cortisol imbalances. Too much intake of sugar and refined grains can contribute towards insulin resistance, liver and pancreas problems and can cause oxidation of our LDL. When this happens we have an environment where plaque will be more likely build up in our arteries.

As I’ve already mentioned, cholesterol causes problems when it is oxidised. When there is a lot of oxidised LDL, vLDL (very low density lipoprotein) is created. These cells have a receptor which causes the immune system to activate. A type of immune cell called macrophages are produced which interact with the altered cholesterol molecule and then the problematic ‘foam cells’ are created. If these foam cells accumulate they will eventually form plaque in the artery walls, which causes narrowing of the arteries and can lead to thrombus formation (blood clots). This process is also very inflammatory, which can cause further damage to artery walls. This can result in conditions such as heart disease, peripheral vascular disease and dementia.

Factors that increase levels of oxidised LDL include a diet high in trans fats (pastries, deep fried foods, potato chips), excess Omega-6 oils compared to Omega-3, excessive sugar intake, smoking, poorly managed diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Having higher levels of HDL also helps to prevent foam cell formation, which is likely due to the association increased HDL in those with higher omega-3 and anti-oxidant stores.

Another form of LDL has been discovered in recent years which has also shown to be dangerous and problematic: MG-min-low-density-lipoprotein (MGmin-LDL). This type of lipoprotein (cholesterol transport) is formed when sugar compounds attach to LDL cholesterol, causing it to become smaller and denser. This form can easily get stuck on artery walls, which is where the problem lies. Balancing blood sugar through diet, good management of diabetes and herbs and nutrients that support blood sugar levels such as chromium and Gymnema sylvestre (Gymnema) can be helpful for supporting healthy blood sugar levels, which will reduce the production of MGmin-LDL.

This oxidation of LDL helps us to understand why high cholesterol is a problem in some people and not in others. It makes sense then that treatment should focus on not just lowering LDLs, but on preventing oxidation, modification and transportation of LDLs and fats into the foam cells that form the plaque in arteries.

Raising HDL should also be a priority because this is what will help our body to mop up the damage from LDL gone wrong. There is no conventional medication for this but diet and lifestyle changes can help here. We should aim for our HDL to get as high as possible.

Avoid low fat diets because this will lower your HDL and foods such as margarine or those that are ‘low fat’ or ‘skim’ often contain products that are bad for us and increase other risk factors for heart disease. Yes that’s right – you’ve probably been told to cut out all fats from your diet, swap butter to margarine, drink low fat milk and eat low fat yoghurt… but these recommendations are outdated, flawed and has been disproven. While fats are high in calories and some fats are altered through heat and oxidation (e.g. trans fats) becoming dangeous, the general fear of fats which was instilled into people over the last few decades in unnecessary and wrong. The right type of fats to eat are covered below and in a previous article about fats here also in this video.

Essentially, eating cholesterol won’t raise your cholesterol but your diet can affect the way cholesterol behaves in the body and increase other risk factors for heart disease.

Cholesterol and Genetics

There are some people who have a genetic tendency towards having high cholesterol levels. These people (and their parents) have higher than normal levels of LDL. This occurs in approximately 1 in 300 Australians and causes up to 10% of early onset coronary artery disease that occurs before 55 years of age. For these people they may have high total blood cholesterol levels irrespective of what they eat, and will require treatment. This treatment will require an approach to clear excess cholesterol from the body, but should also focus again on the underlying causes.

Cholesterol and Stroke

The great fear behind high cholesterol is that if it is too high you will have a heart attack or stroke. The way that this is meant to happen is that cholesterol clogs up in the arteries, and then causes a clot which breaks away, restricting blood flow in the heart causing a heart attack or in the brain causing a stroke. This is a simplistic explanation and does not take into account all factors associated with stroke. I highly recommend reading Chris Masterjohn’s article here. Essentially, high LDL cholesterol levels can be implicated in stroke because higher LDL levels may be oxidised (remember that oxidised LDL is taken up by the immune system, macrophage cells specifically which is what causes plaque) but are only associated with ischemic stroke. As cholesterol levels increase, the risk of hemorrhagic stroke decreases and the risk of ischemic stroke increases.

Cholesterol Medications

Conventional medicines approach to support health and reduce high cholesterol levels are statin medications. While these may be necessary in the small portion of people who are genetically prone to having very high cholesterol levels, in the majority of cases statins are over prescribed. This class of drugs have a high level of side effects, and as the knowledge of this increases more and more people are turning to natural treatment for cholesterol and heart health.

One of the most well known side effects of statin medication is muscle pain. The way this class of medications cause muscle pain is by the breakdown of the muscle tissues. While this is still not fully understood, research has found several mechanisms that may explain how statins can cause muscle pain:

     1. Depleting your body of CoQ10, a nutrient that supports muscle function and energy production. The importance of taking a CoQ10 supplement is fortunately becoming more accepted.

     2. Altering the ability of skeletal muscle to repair and regenerate due to the anti-proliferative effects of statins. One study found that Simvastaton reduced the proliferative ability of muscle cells by 50 percent at a dose equivalent to 40 milligrams. This could clearly have a negative effect on your skeletal muscles’ ability to heal and repair themselves, and could lead to eventually becoming more or less incapacitated (2).

     3. Activating the atrogin-1 gene, which plays a key role in muscle atrophy. (3)

Researchers at The University of Copenhagen have found that the depletion of coenzyme Q10 can cause lower energy production and muscle pain in those taking statin drugs for high cholesterol. Muscle pain is a common side effect of statin treatment as it seems to affect the energy production in muscles and may be the direct cause of muscle weakness and pain. Almost 75% of physically active patients taking statins experience pain. (4)

Some research has even shown that taking statins may actually INCREASE your risk of heart disease, as an association of increased rate of coronary plaques was found in those taking statins. (5)

With so many people taking statins, and the risks of heart disease still alarmingly high it seems that focusing on reducing cholesterol with medications is not the answer. Rather than just lowering cholesterol, we need to look at WHY our cholesterol is increasing.

Natural Support For Cholesterol

Treatment Aims:

Reduce insulin resistance and balance blood sugar levels, by consuming less refined carbohydrates and sugar.

Reduce inflammation by avoiding foods which can contribute to inflammation and supplement with anti-inflammatory herbs and nutrients.

Reduce oxidation by eating foods rich in anti-oxidants, and taking anti-oxidant supplements.

Support liver clearance of cholesterol.

Support stress levels with lifestyle techniques and herbs and nutrients which support the adrenal glands, and nervous system.

Address hormonal deficiencies such as Andropause and Thyroid dysfunction etc.

Natural therapies used in the arsenal against LDL oxidation, high blood cholesterol levels and cardiovascular disease include:

Supplementation with:

Polymethoxyflavones: Also known as PMFs, these natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds found in citrus peel assist in maintaining healthy cholesterol levels.

Research has shown that nobiletin and tangeretin, the phytochemicals found in PMFs, may assist in lowering LDL levels by reducing synthesis and increasing the clearance of LDL cholesterol.

Tocotrienols: Tocotrienols are members of the vitamin E family. These antioxidants also increase the clearance of LDL cholesterol and reduce the body’s production of LDL.

Krill oil: The oil from the crustacean, krill, has been shown to be beneficial for cholesterol balance, particularly by supporting HDL levels.

Fish oil: 2 g to 4 g of combined EPA/DHA has been shown to decrease triglyceride levels and is beneficial for heart health.

Depending on the individual further support may include: Coenzyme Q10, Vitamin C, Vitamin B3 (niacin/nicotinic acid), fibre, liver support (such as Cynara scolymus (Globe Artichoke), Silybum marianum (St Mary’s Thistle), Taraxacum officinale radix (Dandelion root)) Coleus forskohlii (Coleus) and Allium sativum (Garlic).

(Note that all of these remedies help to reduce cholesterol by addressing causes of high cholesterol such as with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties).

Six Tips For Optimal Cardiovascular Performance

Take on these tips for eating and living to support healthy cholesterol and cardiovascular health:

Follow the Mediterranean diet. People eating this diet rich in essential nutrients and antioxidants have the lowest rates of cardiovascular disease in the world.

Eat good fats and Eliminate detrimental trans fats found in many fast foods, fried foods and packaged baked goods. Cut down on sugary refined carbohydrates and processed food. These foods often contain ‘hidden sugars’ that can be converted to fat when supply is high.

Weight loss. If you are overweight, losing extra weight will help to lose the risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease. Your Practitioner can recommend a clinically-proven weight loss program and targeted supplements to assist healthy weight management.

Get moving towards a healthy lifestyle. Exercise improves cardiovascular and overall health and supports your “good” cholesterol levels. Move away from unhealthy habits such as smoking and excessive alcohol intake as they increase your cardiovascular risk.

Address inflammation. If you have increased levels of cholesterol, it is at least in part because of increased inflammation in your body. The cholesterol is there to do a job: help your body to heal and repair. Some basic ways to support inflammation is to reduce inflammation by avoiding foods which can contribute to inflammation and supplement with anti-inflammatory herbs and nutrients.

Balance hormones. Steroid hormones in the body are made from cholesterol: testosterone, progesterone, pregnenolone, androsterone, estrone, estradiol, corticosterone, aldosterone and others. These hormones accomplish a myriad of functions in the body, from regulation of our metabolism, energy production, mineral assimilation, brain, muscle and bone formation to behavior, emotions and reproduction. In our stressful modern lives we consume a lot of these hormones, leading to a condition called “adrenal exhaustion.” Stress and hormone deficiency can cause the body to make more cholesterol.

With so many people taking statins, and the risks of heart disease still alarmingly high it seems that focusing on reducing cholesterol with medications is not the answer. Rather than just lowering cholesterol, we need to look at WHY our cholesterol is increasing.

With the help of natural medicines and by following some key dietary and lifestyle recommendations, you can effectively manage your cholesterol levels. Call or email us today to get started on your journey towards improved cardiovascular health.

Welcome Summer! This is a time most people love because it’s associated with time that they get to spend with their loved ones, beach trips, get-togethers, barbeques and more.

The changes in seasons can have a profound effect not only on our social life, but also on our health, energy and mood. A healthy body can handle these changes with ease, but some people are more sensitive and so are susceptible to falling ill at the change of season.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is it said that our organs can be sensitive in certain seasons so if they are having a hard time we can get symptoms related to what those organs “rule”.

Preparing your body with specific herbs and making food choices based on what is in season can help prepare you for the changes and feel great all year round.

Eating seasonally

Eating seasonally no longer comes as second nature to us. Somewhere in us is programmed the urge to reach for foods which heal and nourish us… but this urge has been dulled. Most foods are now available all year round due to the speed and ease in which food can be shipped from overseas. Food has been moved around the world for many years, however now that transport has become faster and easier it is possible to move perishable food great distances before it spoils. It is now cheaper to produce food overseas where labour costs are lower, such as in African and Asian nations and ship it than it is to produce it locally. However, the large distances that food travels has a price: pollution. Another issue is that food is picked too early and artificially ripened with chemicals. This means that the nutrients that develop during the ripening process are not present in our food, so we are getting less out of it. Not only does this mean we are leaving a bigger carbon footprint, but the quality of the food is affected and this can have an impact on our health.

For the health of both yourself and our environment, try to always eat local produce that’s in season.

How our body changes in the seasons and how we can eat to support this

Healthy Summer

Most people’s priority during summer is keeping cool. Our natural method of regulating our body heat is sweating, and we can help to maintain this mechanism by eating pungent foods (e.g. coriander, ginger, garlic, wasabi).

Aim to drink at least 2 litres of clean filtered water each day, and enjoy lots of fruit.

Summer is also one of the most popular times to lose weight as you become more aware of your body (more skin tends to be revealed) and your metabolism increases as it gets hotter. Exercise is a great way to lose weight, but ensure that for every hour that you exercise you have another litre of water. Consult your naturopath for a professional weight loss program.

In general, the daily diet should contain more vegetables and fruit at this time which will stimulate the appetite and help provide fluids. Warm and cooked foods ensure the digestive system work more effectively; too many greasy, raw and frozen foods can damage the digestive system and lead to a poor appetite, diarrhoea or stomach upset.

As summer progresses try to eat more raw foods, and keep your meals quite light.

Summary:

Consult your naturopath for a weight loss program if desired

Drink at least 2L water each day (and 1L additional for every hour of exercise)

Eat plenty of fruit of vegetables

Eat pungent foods to help regulate the sweating mechanism

Autumn

Preparing for the dryness of winter and supporting stomach and lung function is our aim for autumn. Improving the immune system and ensuring that the body has a sufficient store of body fluid for winter is important in preventing infections and coping with the dry weather. As the lungs and colon are more active in this season people can experience coughs or breathing difficulties, or diarrhoea and/or constipation. The lungs and colon are eliminatory organs, and help us to ‘let go’ both physically and emotionally, so it may happen that unresolved emotions will pop up during this time.

The mucous membranes in the stomach, intestines, lung, mouth, throat and sinuses are one of our first lines of defence – improving the integrity of these and the good bacteria that resides within helps us to reduce our chances of getting an infection in the winter months. If your skin is dry during this time, chances are your lungs are dry too.

Sour foods (eg pineapple and lemon) have astringent properties and this helps prevent bodily fluid loss.

Eat lots of red and yellow vegetables during autumn to get plenty of immune boosting nutrients. Continue to eat pungent foods. There are also several herbal medicines that can increase your immunity by boosting white cell count and will improve your ability to fight infections. If you’re susceptible to getting colds and ‘flu at the change of season, consult your naturopath now to prepare.

Summary

Drink plenty of water

Enjoy sour foods to prevent fluid loss

Take herbs to tone stomach and lung function

E.g. Mullein, Lemon balm, Licorice, Meadowsweet

Take immune boosting herbs and nutrients

E.g. Echinacea, Zinc, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Probiotics, SB.

Winter

During winter, our bodies tend to slow down their processes. We need to focus on building up our energy and reserves for spring. The most important organ to replenish is the adrenal glands, which help us cope with stress. Commonly, people experiencing anxiety, cold limbs, palpitations and fatigue are showing signs of adrenal weakness. Our urinary system is sensitive during winter as well, and according to TCM principles these organs look after our ears, bones, hair and lower back.

The best foods to eat in winter are those with a bitter flavour, are naturally salty (e.g. miso, sardines, soy sauce and barley) and high protein foods. Dark foods such as black beans and seaweed nourish and strengthen the kidneys. Nutrient dense foods are important as well, as the body’s appetite increases in winter yet our metabolism slows down – we are storing more from our food.

According to the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, you should avoid high calorie foods during winter as this can cause excessive heat to accumulate in the lungs, leading to problems like sore throats, bronchitis and skin problems.

Cook your meals for longer over a lower heat, using more water and a little more quality salt and oil. Enjoy hearty meals like soups and stews, and use cooking techniques like roasting rather than stir-frying.

Summary:

Balance the nervous system and rebuild the adrenal glands with herbs

E.g. Licorice, rehmannia, chamomile, oats, passionflower

Energising herbs help to eradicate chronic disease and improve metabolism during winter

Eat nutrient rich but low calorie foods

Ensure you obtain protein with each meal

Eat bitter foods

Spring

Spring is all about new life. Spring is also one of the best times to support and repair our liver function as this organ tends to become more sensitive now. Most people subconsciously cut down on their fatty food and alcohol intake in Spring.

The liver is important for detoxifying all that we eat and come in contact with. It is also our ‘furnance’ – it burns fat for energy. According to the TCM principles the liver stores blood and is connected to our eyes, nails and ligaments. Supporting the liver with herbal medicine can help to reduce the severity of spring time allergies and other conditions that occur. The emotion associated with the liver is anger and frustration and these can surface more at this time. Getting outside and having fun helps us to deal with these emotions.

Start to reduce salty and heavy foods and introduce more sour foods such as chicken, lemon and tomatoes along with sweet and pungent foods such as honey, dates, ginger and onions. These flavours are more nourishing to liver function and by supporting our liver with food and also with herbs, we help our body to eliminate any old disease and increase our energy and metabolism. Try to eat more greens, particularly those that are fast growing.

Summary

Support liver function with herbs

E.g. Dandelion root, St Mary’s Thistle, Schisandra, Globe Artichoke

Reduce heavy food foods

Increase sour, sweet and pungent foods

Increase green leafy vegetables

A lot of the health properties I mention are based in Chinese medicine principles. An example of this is when a food is described as ‘cooling’, ‘drying’, or ‘warming’.

Ernestina Burchmore is a acupuncturist who has been in practice for 10 years. She has kindly explained the effects of these properties in foods for us.

Warmer/hot foods tend to cause dryness. Cool/cold foods tend to moisten, promote urination and reduce fever and dryness. Damp is created when the digestive system is weak and cannot fully process food, thereby creating an excess amount of mucus that comes out in the skin, stools or through the lungs or sinuses. E.g. Coconut can give rise to eczema-like rash, oranges can make you sneeze and wheeze.

This is just a rough guide. Other food properties include the roles of the 5 Flavours – sweet, sour, pungent, bitter and salty. But I won’t discuss this here.

From a botanical perspective, fruits are technically the flowering part that derives from a plant’s ovaries and are any vegetable which contains seeds. Therefore fruits also include beans, corn, tomatoes, cucumber, capsicum, eggplant, and pumpkin (to name a few). This article only covers those which are commonly classified as fruit, and only the most popular varieties.

General tips about fruit:

It is always important to ensure your fruit is properly ripened (via tree or vine). If a fruit is not adequately ripened it doesn’t have as many benefits, and may even have some harmful properties (particularly so with citrus). When unripe fruit is purchased, it should be allowed to ripen at room temperature before eating. An exception is the intentional use of certain unripe fruit for its medicinal effect.

Another potential issue with is the excessive use of pesticides on the most popular types of fruit. These pesticides can often negate any health benefits.

Fruits are easily digested, and are alkalizing, cleansing and cooling. If you are overly stressed or have a lot of ‘mental heat’, then fruits are for you. The alkaline natures of fruits also help to get your bowels moving.

If you have a lot of sweet fruit every day, it is possible to develop too much ‘damp’ (according to Chinese medicine principles) and therefore it is beneficial to have occasional periods where you don’t have fruit. Too much fruit will also mean too much sugar, which is not helpful for weight loss or keeping blood sugar levels stable.

The sugar in fruit is fructose, and this takes longer to affect your blood sugars than standard sugar such as sucrose or glucose. Fructose needs to be converted to glucose by the liver. Fructose is also 1½ times sweeter than sucrose. Therefore if you’re craving something sweet, not only will having a piece of fruit instead of a chocolate bar provide you with more vitamins and minerals, it will also have a better affect on your blood sugar levels.

It is best to avoid having too much juice, and rather have the benefits of fruit by eating them whole.

Summary

In the spirit of the Olympics, I thought that I should pick some winners from the fruits. However it didn’t seem fair to nominate only three awesome fruits, so I chose 5 (4th and 5th place can stand on the end of the podium). My picks are purely based on my own opinion taking into consideration their health benefits, nutrient content, taste (very personal I know), convenience of eating (I think that’s important at it affects how likely you are to eat it).

Based on the health benefits and nutrient content, I hereby state my favourite fruit to be Goji berries for their amazing anti-oxidant content. They also are a good source of protein and vitamin C.

A close second is Kiwi Fruit. It is very low in calories, and high in magnesium and vitamin C. It’s also very convenient, cheap, tasty and satisfying to eat.

In third place is Papaya. Its wonderful digestive enzymes make it unlike any other fruit. It is low in calories, and high in vitamin A, folate and calcium. It makes an excellent breakfast food to kickstart your digestion.

Fourth place is apple for its nutrient content. It is also very convenience, low in calories and contains the excellent chemicals malic acid and pectin.

Fifth is fig. While comparatively lower in vitamins it is a fantastic source of calcium and potassium, it has a lot of health benefits especially as a laxative and is delicious to eat.
