This episode is part 2 of the Chronic Pain & Inflammation series, covering what natural methods can be helpful for dealing with the underlying causes of chronic pain, as well as some naturals ways to reduce symptoms and provide relief.

In this episode I discuss herbal medicine, nutrition (diet and supplementation) for dealing with pain, as well as the techniques to support the mental aspect of pain.

If you haven’t had a chance to listen to the first episode you can check it out here: Chronic Pain and Inflammation – Part 1

Most people will experience pain at some stage in their lives, however for some this pain can be chronic, at times severe. Many people struggle with the side effects of conventional pain medications, and turn to natural medicine for support.
Herbal medicine and food can be used to assist in the management of pain conditions, both in addressing the underlying cause of pain conditions, and in providing some pain relief.

Earlier this year I spoke at the Wise Women Gathering about Chronic Pain and Inflammation. What a wonderful event it was, full of many kind, wise and wonderful ladies. I was honoured to be asked to speak again and this year my topic was something quite different to my talk of the previous year, Herbal Medicine for Motherhood – I spoke on Chronic Pain and Inflammation.

In my clinic I see a lot of people who experience chronic pain of various degrees and the ways that this is dealt with conventionally is sadly, in many cases insufficient. The increasing reliance on potentially harmful medications and lack of holistic care is an issue that compounds the problem.

I had so much content I wanted to share at this talk, but not enough time to cover everything, so I have shared this now in my podcast. I am splitting the topic into sections, and I share with you now the first part, where I will be talking about the underlying issues that feed into chronic pain and inflammation.

Some topics that will be covered include:

What is Pain?

What is the difference between acute and chronic pain?

Understanding chronic pain.

Causes of chronic pain. These include:

Diet and lifestyle

Biological make up (including genetics)

Gut health

Hormones

Environment and Personal History

Chronic Infections

The Mind.

Health & Wellbeing Podcast #24

Medical Marijuana – Interview with Dr Rachna Patel

Medical Marijuana (Cannabis) has recently been legalised in Australia, and in 2017 some GPs and specialists will be able to prescribe it. It is still uncertain what conditions Cannabis will be prescribed for, however looking to the countries which are already using it we can see that there a lot of potential conditions it can help with.

Chronic pain, anxiety, inflammatory bowel conditions, post traumatic stress disorder and nausea are some of the potential conditions which it may be approved for.

There are a lot of uncertainties that people will have about this, and to answer my own curiosities as well as provide some information for you, I have asked these questions of an expert in Medical Marijuana – Dr Rachna Patel. I wanted to know how it could be used safely, what sort of research is out there, how you can get benefits from medical marijuana without getting high, how best to take medical marijuana, and are there conditions which medical marijuana shouldn’t be used for.

About Dr Patel

Dr. Rachna Patel has been practicing in the area of Medical Marijuana since 2012.

Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is quite an old tradition that developed from Ayurvedic principles (traditional Indian medicine). It’s a very simple practice that only takes 20 minutes out of your daily routine, but the benefits are many.

What is it?

Oil pulling is considered to be helpful for an enormous range of conditions – ranging from issues such as general dental health, arthritis, inflammation, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Traditionally it was considered to work by drawing out toxins from the salivary glands, however as it has become increasingly popular in the last few years, researchers have looked into the practice and found that it provides its benefits by addressing the ‘bad’ bacteria in your mouth – you could say that it PULLS the bad bacteria out. This action has a huge flow on effect to the rest of the digestive system, and therefore the rest of the body. Oil pulling also acts as a form of tongue massage, which acts on pressure points to support healthy energy flow along the meridians that flow all throughout your body, in a style similar to reflexology and acupressure.

By reducing the bad bacteria in your teeth and mouth you can not only improve your dental health (by reducing the bacteria that cause plaque), whiten teeth and nourish gum health, but also improve the balance in the rest of your digestive system (remember the mouth is the entrance to the digestive system, so removing bad guys here will help further on down the line). The good bacteria in your gut have an enormous amount of roles in the body – digestive bacteria affects inflammation, immune health, mood, hormone balance, and even contributes towards cardiovascular health (amazingly, an analysis of cardiovascular plaque has found that it contains a large amount of ‘bad’ bacteria which originate in the mouth and stomach!).

Which Oil do I use?

Traditionally oil pulling was performed with sunflower or canola oil, and sesame oil is also a popular choice. You could use any form of oil as long as it is organic and cold pressed. Cold-pressed sesame oil won’t have as strong a taste as the type that you cook your stir-fries with. Coconut oil is my personal preference due its taste, and is the most common recommendation amongst oil pulling advocates. At the moment it’s probably one of the easiest to find in large quantities as well. (Some people don’t like the consistency of coconut oil when it’s set which happens in colder months, so you can melt it before putting it in your mouth. Personally, I like it! It’s like a coco nutty treat, also like I’ve bitten into a Bounty.) You can add a 3-4 of drops of oregano oil for its anti-microbial properties, however you might want to start with only 1 drop as this can be quite strong for some.

How to do it:

Take 1 tbsp coconut oil in your mouth, and swish around for 20 minutes. You want to ensure that the oil is getting between your teeth and over and under your tongue. Then spit it out! Couldn’t be simpler.

During this time you can get creative about what else to do. Read a book? Take a shower? Make the bed? Clean the house? Prepare your lunch? Water the garden? Chill under a tree? You can do anything as long as your don’t have to open your mouth.

After the 20 minutes are up, SPIT the oil out (not into the sink or toilet as it can clog the pipes). Then rinse your mouth thoroughly with water, and brush your teeth (consider keeping a separate toothbrush just for this purpose, and wash it with 3% hydrogen peroxide to kill the bacteria).

It is very important not to swallow this oil, as it contains bacteria that you want to get rid of. While you’re getting used to oil pulling you may accidentally swallow some of it, but keep working on it.

If you are new to oil pulling, you may find it a bit challenging and need to spit the oil out earlier as the sensation can be a little strange. (I only lasted 5 minutes the first time I did it!) Try starting with a tsp instead of a tbsp. After a few minutes of oil pulling you’ll feel like the oil has increased in quantity, it’s your saliva joining the coconut oil. You’ll get used to this. Try not to swish too vigorously as your jaw may get tired after 20 minutes – gently does it.

Oil pulling is a simple technique that you can incorporate into your daily routine. If you have poor dental health or a chronic condition such as fibromyalgia, you may want to oil pull a few times a day, and then as your dental and general health improves you can get away with doing this just once or twice a week.

Fruit, in moderate amounts, is good for you. But what fruit is best for you? In this article I detail the nutrient content of fruits, and also list their health properties.

A lot of the health properties I mention are based in Chinese medicine principles. An example of this is when a food is described as ‘cooling’, ‘drying’, or ‘warming’.

Ernestina Burchmore is a acupuncturist who has been in practice for 10 years. She has kindly explained the effects of these properties in foods for us.

Warmer/hot foods tend to cause dryness. Cool/cold foods tend to moisten, promote urination and reduce fever and dryness. Damp is created when the digestive system is weak and cannot fully process food, thereby creating an excess amount of mucus that comes out in the skin, stools or through the lungs or sinuses. E.g. Coconut can give rise to eczema-like rash, oranges can make you sneeze and wheeze.

This is just a rough guide. Other food properties include the roles of the 5 Flavours – sweet, sour, pungent, bitter and salty. But I won’t discuss this here.

Ernestina Burchmore is a qualified Acupuncturist and experienced Chinese Herbalist. She graduated from the University of Technology, Sydney in 2001 with a B.A, in Health Science (Acupuncture) / B,A. International Studies (China Studies). Ernestina has been practicing at Health Dimensions in Bella Vista and WIndsor for 10 years. Her general practice focuses on pain management, stress management, fertility solutions, women’s health, pregnancy, gastrointestinal disorders and respiratory disorders.

Ernestina believes that treating the whole person and getting to the root problem that is causing the symptoms is the key to really solving the problems you come in to have treated.

From a botanical perspective, fruits are technically the flowering part that derives from a plant’s ovaries and are any vegetable which contains seeds. Therefore fruits also include beans, corn, tomatoes, cucumber, capsicum, eggplant, and pumpkin (to name a few). This article only covers those which are commonly classified as fruit, and only the most popular varieties.

General tips about fruit:

It is always important to ensure your fruit is properly ripened (via tree or vine). If a fruit is not adequately ripened it doesn’t have as many benefits, and may even have some harmful properties (particularly so with citrus). When unripe fruit is purchased, it should be allowed to ripen at room temperature before eating. An exception is the intentional use of certain unripe fruit for its medicinal effect.

Another potential issue with is the excessive use of pesticides on the most popular types of fruit. These pesticides can often negate any health benefits.

Fruits are easily digested, and are alkalizing, cleansing and cooling. If you are overly stressed or have a lot of ‘mental heat’, then fruits are for you. The alkaline natures of fruits also help to get your bowels moving.

If you have a lot of sweet fruit every day, it is possible to develop too much ‘damp’ (according to Chinese medicine principles) and therefore it is beneficial to have occasional periods where you don’t have fruit. Too much fruit will also mean too much sugar, which is not helpful for weight loss or keeping blood sugar levels stable.

The sugar in fruit is fructose, and this takes longer to affect your blood sugars than standard sugar such as sucrose or glucose. Fructose needs to be converted to glucose by the liver. Fructose is also 1½ times sweeter than sucrose. Therefore if you’re craving something sweet, not only will having a piece of fruit instead of a chocolate bar provide you with more vitamins and minerals, it will also have a better affect on your blood sugar levels.

It is best to avoid having too much juice, and rather have the benefits of fruit by eating them whole.

Apple

Cooling nature (Reduces heat, especially summer heat)

Helps to produce fluid for the body, making it good for lung health. It can help protect the lungs from cigarette smoking (not that anyone should be doing that anyway)

Stimulates digestion

Green apples cleanse the liver and gallbladder and help to soften gallstones.

Contains malic acid and tartaric acid which can help to inhibit the growth of bad bacteria and reduce fermentation.

Contains pectin, which removes cholesterol and helps bind up and remove toxic metals, and also promotes good bacteria in the digestive tract

Contains calcium-d-glucarate, which is good for healthy hormones

Helpful for people with low blood sugar levels

Grate an apple and apply directly or wrap in muslin and put on your eyes for 20 minutes to help with eye strain, pink eye or sunburn

Apricot

Moistens the lungs

Fresh apricots are good for dry throats, thirst and asthma

When buying the dried type, buy the organic or uncoloured variety as dried apricots often have added sulfur compounds to make them brighter and this can worsen allergies and asthma particularly in children

Good source of vitamin A and carotene.

Dried apricots are a good source of iron, cobalt, and copper making them good for anemia

Summary

In the spirit of the Olympics, I thought that I should pick some winners from the fruits. However it didn’t seem fair to nominate only three awesome fruits, so I chose 5 (4th and 5th place can stand on the end of the podium). My picks are purely based on my own opinion taking into consideration their health benefits, nutrient content, taste (very personal I know), convenience of eating (I think that’s important at it affects how likely you are to eat it).

Based on the health benefits and nutrient content, I hereby state my favourite fruit to be Goji berries for their amazing anti-oxidant content. They also are a good source of protein and vitamin C.

A close second is Kiwi Fruit. It is very low in calories, and high in magnesium and vitamin C. It’s also very convenient, cheap, tasty and satisfying to eat.

In third place is Papaya. Its wonderful digestive enzymes make it unlike any other fruit. It is low in calories, and high in vitamin A, folate and calcium. It makes an excellent breakfast food to kickstart your digestion.

Fourth place is apple for its nutrient content. It is also very convenience, low in calories and contains the excellent chemicals malic acid and pectin.

Fifth is fig. While comparatively lower in vitamins it is a fantastic source of calcium and potassium, it has a lot of health benefits especially as a laxative and is delicious to eat.

What are your thoughts? What is your favourite fruit? How would you have ranked them?

For those who don’t normally like eggplant this one for you to try.

Ingredients

1 large eggplant or 2-3 thin eggplants

2 Cloves of Garlic, minced

2 tablespoons Olive Oil

1 teaspoon Dried Oregano

1 teaspoon Dried Basil

1/2 teaspoon Dried Thyme

1 teaspoon Smokey Paprika

1/2 teaspoon Chilli Flakes (optional)

to taste Salt

to taste Freshly Ground Black Pepper

Method

Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Cut eggplants in half length-wise, leaving stem ends intact.

Mix garlic and olive oil in a small bowl. Combine oregano, basil, thyme, paprika and chilli flakes in separate bowl and stir to mix.

Lightly brush cut sides of eggplants with garlic-oil mixture and grill, cut side down, until lightly browned, about 3 minutes.

Lightly brush skin sides with oil mixture. Invert eggplants and brush tops with remaining oil.

Sprinkle tops with dried herb mixture and salt and pepper to taste.

Continue cooking eggplants, cute side up until very tender, 6-8 minutes, or as needed.

Tips
Eggplants are actually berries, and are a member of the deadly nightshade family. They were originally named Solanum insanum as Europeans believed eating would cause instant insanity. The name was later changed in the thirteenth century by the Arabs in Catalonia to Solanum melongena. They were originally the size and shape of eggs.

Eggplant has cooling properties and reduces yang energy. Eggplants are thought to bring energy and blood to the uterus, which is why in Asia pregnant women are advised to eat eggplant sparingly.

Eggplants are mostly water and so are low in calories. They are high in fibre and are a good source of potassium, manganese, molybdenum and are also a source of the anti-oxidant Nasunin.

Being part of the deadly nightshade family, it is recommended that people with arthritis have eggplant in moderation, if at all.
